The UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) was held in 1992 at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to discuss the global environmental issues that would become central to policy implementation. The Conference is better known as ‘Earth Summit orRio Conventions’. The 1992 Rio Earth Summit gave rise to the three Rio Conventions:

  1. ♦   the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD)
  2. ♦   the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and
  3. ♦   the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)

It is recognized that biodiversity, climate change, desertification and land degradation are intrinsically linked, operating in the same ecosystems and addressing the interdependent issues. Maintaining and restoring healthy ecosystems play a key role in adapting to and mitigating the climate change.
